Challenge

Parks Project is a brand that frequently collaborates with different brands in the means of National Park and Wildlife conservation. With the current fascination of vintage animation styles, and the implementation of a psychedelic perspective of the outdoors, Alice and Wonderland's imagery is perfect for a collaboration with the Parks Project.

Stephen Mayer, a Salt Lake City native, was nurtured in the publishing world by his magazine-running father and developed a fascination for fonts upon receiving a Mac for his family. During his collegiate years, he skipped lectures and gained knowledge about typeface—and life—by working as a designer for his university newspaper.

He also worked independently as a consultant, bridging the gap between typeface creators and users, always championing the needs of both parties. Not only is he the co-founder of the web platforms, Typographica and Fonts In Use, Stephen has also penned a regular column for Print magazine and authored the acclaimed book The Anatomy of Type. In 2017, he became an integral part of the nonprofit library and museum, Letterform Archive, as an Associate Curator and Editorial Director.

Solution

Pulling from the imagery of the 'flower choir' scene in the original Alice and Wonderland movie, I hand illustrated a t-shirt and hoodie design that merged the two brands identities. These designs are dynamic and fit well on a variety of clothing items, as well as being able to look uniform on many different color bases. I have created a variety of mockups for this product and make sure to include the brand markers for the Parks Project that are displayed on a variety of their other clothing items.

Closing Thoughts

Having the vertical illustration variations allowed me to approach this self-progress project in a new light. I framed the designs to be simple enough for the production team to screen print, while also being multi-dimensional and attract the consumers attention. I love the Parks Project mission and released design works, and I hope I have done their brand image justice.
