Challenge

Bloom has a significant presence on social media and is recognized for their wide range of health and lifestyle products. One of the most recent trends on lifestyle social media has been taking 'greens supplements' for gut health benefits. Although Bloom's product is effective, their packaging tends to blend in with other brands when on display in store.

Stephen Mayer, a Salt Lake City native, was nurtured in the publishing world by his magazine-running father and developed a fascination for fonts upon receiving a Mac for his family. During his collegiate years, he skipped lectures and gained knowledge about typeface—and life—by working as a designer for his university newspaper.

He also worked independently as a consultant, bridging the gap between typeface creators and users, always championing the needs of both parties. Not only is he the co-founder of the web platforms, Typographica and Fonts In Use, Stephen has also penned a regular column for Print magazine and authored the acclaimed book The Anatomy of Type. In 2017, he became an integral part of the nonprofit library and museum, Letterform Archive, as an Associate Curator and Editorial Director.

Solution

Utilizing patterns I created with ink concentrate, acrylic and water color paints, I was able to create packaging that resonated with the products contained. Creating several of these patterns, I am able to effectively create a cohesive line of products that draws the consumers attention when presented in a storefront. I then made the mockups below to show how the front and back sides would appear in the store for a better visual example.

Closing Thoughts

Being able to work different mediums into my graphics work makes me more confident as a designer and is a tool I use often to make my work stand out. Blooms current packaging is effective, but creating a new look for their line can stir new interest in customers that may be loyal to a different brand.
